Media Disposal Recommendations
In order to facilitate compliance with internal standards and New York State law, the RIT Information Security Office provides two media destruction devices for the secure disposal of electronic media containing personal identifying information or other RIT Confidential information:
- A media shredder (for destruction of portable media such as CDs, DVDs, diskettes, etc.)
- A degausser (for electronic destruction of hard drives and tapes)
Access these media disposal devices as well as a paper shredder through the ITS HelpDesk (Gannett Building, Room 7B-1113).
The RIT Information Security Office recommends the following means of disposal:
| Media | Disposal Method |
|---|---|
| Paper | Use a shredder. Crosscut is preferred over a strip shredder. |
| CD, DVD, diskette, etc. | Use the media shredder (located at the ITS HelpDesk, 7B-1113). |
| Hard Drives |
|
| Tapes | Use the degausser (located at the ITS HelpDesk, 7B-1113). |
| Other | Use an industry standard means of secure disposal. |
